What an operator record contains
Every operator we cover has three layers of data — ownership, operations, and market signals. We won't surface an operator publicly until we've verified five core fields manually: legal entity, ownership control, headquarters address, founder/CEO name, and active state license.
Beyond the core five, depth varies by operator size. A 30+ truck operator typically carries 120+ fielded attributes. A six-truck single-state shop carries 40 — we still cover them, but we'd rather show fewer fields than pad records with low-confidence inferences.
Confidence tiering
Every field carries a confidence tag (A · B · C) visible in the product. A = directly verified or filed. B = inferred from two corroborating sources. C = single-source and dated. Filters default to A + B; toggle C in for exploratory work.
Sources we triangulate
We don't believe in single-source records. Every field is corroborated against at least one other source before it enters the database. The 14 source categories, ordered by how heavily we weight them:
| Source | What we pull | Cadence |
|---|---|---|
| State pesticide-license registries | Legal entity, operator status, license class, holder name | Weekly · 7 states |
| DOT motor-carrier registrations | Truck count, fleet size, fleet mix, hazmat endorsement | Daily |
| SBA loan filings (7(a) + 504) | Loan size, purpose, lender, closing date | Weekly |
| Secretary of state filings | Officer/registered-agent changes, dissolution, M&A | Weekly · 7 states |
| Operator websites (live snapshot) | Service mix, locations, leadership pages, "about" copy | Bi-weekly |
| Job-posting feeds | Open roles, role mix, posting cadence vs trailing-12 average | Daily |
| Hands-on operator survey | Revenue band, EBITDA margin, customer mix, succession plans | Annual · opt-in |
| Trade press & industry filings | Announced deals, leadership moves, regulatory actions | Daily |
| Tech-stack fingerprinting | FSM, payments, telematics platforms in use | Quarterly |
| PE / fund disclosures | Sponsor identity, vintage, prior platform exits | Monthly |
Plus four supplemental sources used only with B/C confidence: EPA enforcement records, county-level business filings, Yelp/Google review panels (operations signal only — never revenue), and aerial-imagery counts for fleet-yard verification.
How signals are surfaced
A signal is an event we believe a sophisticated buyer would want to know about, surfaced within 72 hours of detection. Our default signal vocabulary is narrow on purpose — we'd rather miss something than cry wolf.
- Ownership change. Officer / registered agent changes or majority sale.
- Financial. SBA filing, bank-loan filing, distress (lien, lapse).
- Operational. Hiring spike (>1σ above trailing-12), fleet expansion (>15% truck delta), new location.
- Regulatory. License lapse, EPA enforcement, state-level penalty.
We deliberately do not surface "website redesigns," "social media spikes," or "press mentions" as standalone signals. They're noise. Where they cluster with real events, they appear in the operator's activity timeline as context, not as a flag.
What we explicitly don't track
A complete coverage list is also a list of what's missing. We tell you what's missing because it's how a buyer should think about the dataset.
- Individual customer relationships. No customer lists, no churn data. These aren't ours to have.
- Detailed financials below the EBITDA band. Most operators are private and we won't speculate.
- Litigation history below state level. County records vary too widely to be useful at scale.
- Anything below the six-truck threshold. Roughly 14,000 US operators are sub-six-truck. We don't currently cover them — the data decay rate is too high for us to maintain a useful record.
Update cadence
The weekly brief lands Mondays at 7:00 AM ET. The underlying database is updated continuously — most "live" signals appear in the product within 24 hours of detection. The full quarterly methodology audit is published to subscribers each April, July, October, and January, with diffs from the prior quarter.
Research team
PestBrief's data is built by a team of seven analysts — six full-time, one contract — backgrounded in industrial-services M&A, ag-tech research, and journalism. We're slow on purpose. If you'd like to talk to a researcher about a specific operator or thesis, the Acquirer and Industry tiers include direct researcher Slack access.
Corrections
If you're an operator and a record about your company is wrong, email research@pestbrief.com. We verify and correct within five business days. We publish a public corrections log dating to our first public release.
